A HISTORY OF TUNBRIDGE WELLS
In 1684, Viscount Purbeck's widow, Margaret, also known as 'The Princess of Babylon' for her love of fashion and dancing, provided land on Mount Sion for the earliest lodging houses and ground at the north end of the Pantiles, where the Church of King Charles the Martyr was later built. And so began the development of this elegant and fashionable town. From 1800 the town grew rapidly. With the cost of living less expensive than in London and stagecoaches providing a reliable service, it was now possible to travel between London and Tunbridge Wells in only five hours.
In 1909, King Edward VII officially recognised the popularity of Tunbridge Wells with it's many Royal and aristocratic visitors - including his mother, Queen Victoria - over the centuries by granting the town it's 'Royal' prefix.
Today, Royal Tunbridge Wells remains a sought-after place to live and to visit as it retains much of its original charm and elegance.
